Recognition of sound sources and events is an important proRecognition of sound sources and events is an important process in sound perception and has been studied in many research domains. Conversely sounds that cannot be recognized are not often studied except by electroacoustic music composers. Besides, considerations on recognition of sources might help to address the problem of stimulus selection and categorization of sounds in the context of perception research. This paper introduces what we call abstract sounds with the existing musical background and shows their relevance for different applications.

Synthesis of Environmental Sounds in Interactive Multimodal Systems

This review paper discusses the literature on perception and synthesis of environmental sounds. Relevant studies in ecological acoustics and multimodal perception are reviewed, and physicallybased sound synthesis techniques for various families of environmental sounds are compared. Current research directions an d open issues, including multimodal interfaces and virtal environments, automatic r...

Combining pattern recognition and deep-learning-based algorithms to automatically detect commercial quadcopters using audio signals (Research Article)

Commercial quadcopters with many private, commercial, and public sector applications are a rapidly advancing technology. Currently, there is no guarantee to facilitate the safe operation of these devices in the community. Three different automatic commercial quadcopters identification methods are presented in this paper. Among these three techniques, two are based on deep neural networks in whi...

Vibrotactile Detection, Identification and Directional Perception of signal-Processed Sounds from Environmental Events: A Pilot Field Evaluation in Five Cases

Objectives: Conducting field tests of a vibrotactile aid for deaf/deafblind persons for detection, identification and directional perception of environmental sounds. Methods: Five deaf (3F/2M, 22–36 years) individuals tested the aid separately in a home environment (kitchen) and in a traffic environment. Their eyes were blindfolded and they wore a headband and holding a vibrator for sound id...

Automatic sound generation for spherical objects hitting straight beams based on physical models

The objective of this paper is the development of concepts, methods and a prototype for an audio frame work. This audio frame work shall describe sounds on a highly abstract semantic level. We describe every sound as the result of one or several interactions between one or several objects at a certain place and in a certain environment. The attributes of every interaction influence the generate...

Evaluation of Bone-conduction Headsets for Use in Multitalker Communication Environments

Standard audio headphones are useful in many applications, but they cover the ears of the listener and thus may impair the perception of ambient sounds. Bone-conduction headphones offer a possible alternative, but traditionally their use has been limited to monaural applications due to the high propagation speed of sound in the human skull. Here we show that stereo bone-conduction headsets can ...
